Slow Start To Monsoon Season

Forecasters have predicted this year’s monsoon season to be below average and the lack of rain we’ve seen compared to last year’s is proving to be right. The Valley is expected to see its first bout of monsoon weather start to unfold soon. The weather forecast for next week is predicting a chance of rain next Tuesday and Friday. There has been a noticeable delay when it comes to monsoons here in Avondale, Goodyear, Southwest Phoenix so hopefully this chance of storms that the forecast is expecting brings much needed moisture to the Valley, especially during this Excessive Heat Wave we are currently experiencing.

Stay tuned for our upcoming blog where will provide information on staying safe during monsoon storms.

Stay Safe

Avondale, Goodyear, and the rest of the Valley is currently under an Excessive Heat Warning which is expected to last into next Thursday, July 13th. According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, temperatures within the coming days are expected to top out at 118 degrees for most of the Valley. Residents and visitors alike should stay safe and hydrated when out in the heat and try to stay indoors as much as you can. It’s also important to avoid prolonged sun exposure and any high strenuous outdoor activity.

It’s important to educate yourself on the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To avoid these heat related illnesses, make sure to drink water and avoid any drinks that can dehydrate you such as alcohol or sugary drinks. If you find yourself having to work outside in the heat, take frequent breaks in a shaded area or indoors.

Be Safe When Grilling

It’s summertime and despite the hot temperatures, spending time outdoors is a must. Whether you are relaxing poolside, camping in the mountains, or out on the patio in your own backyard, being outside, soaking up some sun, and getting fresh air is always needed. Outdoor grilling and barbecuing is a favorite pastime for many, especially during those social gatherings with friends and family. SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix wants you to remain safe while grilling to avoid potential fire hazards from occurring. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), from 2014-2018, “grills, hibachis or barbecues were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including an average of 4,900 structure fires and 5,700 outside or unclassified fires (NFPA.org). Here are some safety tips to consider the next time you are grilling.

Safety Tips

  • Be sure to place your grill outside and a safe distance away from your home and any outdoor structures that can catch fire.
  • Don’t place the grill near any dry brush, trees, or shrubbery that can easily catch on fire. Be sure to place the grill on a flat and leveled surface to prevent the grill from toppling over.
  • Clean your grill properly and remove all grease or fat buildup.
  • If you’re using a gas grill, make sure to check the hose for any wear or tear to prevent a leak from occurring. To do so, use a soap and water mixture to apply to the hose and look for any bubbles.
  • Children and pets should be kept away from the grill, at least 3 feet away.
  • Do not leave your grill unattended. Be sure to always have someone nearby to watch the grill in case you must step away for a bit.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher on hand just in case. Make sure to familiarize yourself with how to properly use it.

Don't Let Monsoon Storms Slow Down Your Business

Roof gutter on building Protect your business from water damage during rain storms.

As a property owner, it is extremely vital to your business’s productivity that all prevention and safeguards be done to thwart water damage from taking place during our busy monsoon season. Since the official start of monsoon season, which was June 15th, the Phoenix area has already seen a number of storms passing through the Valley. Yesterday, a dust storm warning was issued in which blowing dust was seen entering the Valley from the south. Dust storms typically bring high winds, blowing dust, low visibility, and in some cases, rainstorms.

Having a plan in place for your business can help prevent more severe damage from taking place and halting your business’s daily operations. We recommend having your property’s roof inspected for any damage that could potentially lead to rain leaking into the building. The building’s drainage system also needs to be inspected and cleared of any blockages that could prevent the water from properly draining out of your gutters.

SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix typically sees roof damage being a common cause for water damage occurring during monsoons. If you find your business in this situation, give us a call. We are available 24/7 for water damage emergencies.

Rain on roof SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix can help if you are dealing with water damage.

Monsoon season is officially in full swing and began last Thursday with majority of the Phoenix area experiencing it’s first bout of rain, dust, lightning, and thunderstorms. As the season progresses with a chance of more storms expected as the weeks progress, it’s important for Avondale and Goodyear residents to prepare for emergencies which could potentially lead to water damage on your property.

One of the common causes we see take place during monsoon season is rainwater leaking into homes and businesses. To prevent this from occurring, inspect your roof for any cracks, damaged roof tiles, or any other noticeable wear and tear. We recommend contacting a licensed roofing specialist to make the necessary repairs. It’s also crucial to examine your windows and windows to make sure they are properly sealed. We’ve had instances where homeowners discovered water leaking in from their windows which led to damaged walls and flooring. You need to examine your door to make sure it is properly sealed and no water from the outside will enter. If your home is in a lower elevated area and is prone to flooding, make sure all the entrances are properly sealed and inspected for any cracks or openings that would allow water to enter. You can also purchase sandbags to use on the outside of your home to act as a barrier.

It is easy to find yourself overwhelmed with daily stresses and maybe you can’t find the time to deal with monsoon prep on your home.  If you find yourself in an emergency and dealing with water damage, it is okay, SERVPRO of Avondale/Goodyear/Southwest Phoenix is here to help.
